Miller senior Karst Hunter was a third-team all-stater a year ago and brings 20 points and 10 rebounds back for a Miller squad that went 18-4 a year ago.

When the ball tips for Saturday’s home opener vs. Cheyenne Eagle Butte, coach Darin Hunter and the Miller Rustlers will have a big-time test to get the season rolling.
A year ago, Miller had a spectacular run into the Round-of-16 only to lose to a Red Cloud team that eventually finished 5th in the Class A state tournament. That squad had a ton of seniors: Jarek Kindle, Xavier Sporrer, Cody Beevers, Devn Letsche, Steven Fernholz, Henry Mullaney and Caleb DeBoer.
A ton of firepower to replace, BUT, Miller returns 6-foot-4 senior Karst Hunter who had a monster junior campaign with 20.2 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 3.1 APG, 2 SPG and 1 blocked shot per game. Hunter, better known for his football exploits is a big-time competitor with a relentless motor….
The loss of Fernholz from a year ago will be hard to replace. Hunter and Fernholz teamed for one of the more athletic, tenacious big-man tandems in the Class A ranks, and without that twin-tower next to him, teams will likely spend a lot of attention on Hunter.
That cupboard though is not bare…
Joey Simpson - Garrett Knox and Eli Jones are seniors who are just solid all around athletes that are good enough to possibly deflect some of the attention that Karst will attract - Miller coach Darin Hunter
One of the guys to look for this year is 6-foot-2 junior, Tyler Schumacher!
With a ton of scoring lost to graduation, junior Tyler Schumacher is one to watch in Region 6A.
Schumacher spent the summer working with Clark/Willow Lake coach Jerome Nesheim as part of the Barn-Burner Basketball Academy.
“Tyler Schumacher is a Junior who has really put in a lot of time in the off-season to take on some of the offensive load,” Hunter said.
Don’t know how much playing time they will get but waiting in the wings are a pair of youngsters that could get some experience and contribute later in the season.
8th-grader - Spencer Fernholz (6-foot-3)….Remember the name
