Look out Class A track - Here come the Miller RUSTLERS!

By Rich Winter

Caught some of the Miller field and track results from the Region 6A meet and am really looking forward to seeing the Rustlers in action Friday and Saturday at the Class A meet in the Black Hills.

100 Hurdles - Avany Long of Chamberlain and Kayde Fernholz of Miller threw down in a terrific region final.

1st - Long 15.3

2nd - Fernholz - 15.6

Terrific times for both....If they can duplicate that on Friday morning, Finals could await on Saturday.

Let's check some of the other state qualifiers for the Miller girls.

400 meters: Jaden Werdel 7th-grader (What an awesome opportunity to see the big stage and feel what it is like)

300 hurdles: Abby Kettlehut....ran a 50-flat at regions, only a sophomore, a good opportunity to see what it is all about.

Miller girls 4x100 - Region champs 54.6 (Abby Ketelhut, Teanna Pawlowski, Vonna Gail Schlechter, Karde Fernholz)

Miller Girls 4x200 - Region Champs 1:55.2 (Ketelhut, Pawlowski, Schlechter, Fernholz)

Miller Girls 4x800 - Region champs 11:51.5 (Sara Jessen, Brooke Sargent, Macie Werdel and Abby Ketelhut)

Discus - Elise Brooks (junior) 101' (lotta great discus throwers up in Miller over the years)

Schlecter has a chance to medal in girls triple jump:

At the Region 6A meet, Schlechter got out to 33'4"

34 feet should get a medal and this sophomore is right there.

Welcome back Jarek Kindle...

One of the guys I was really looking forward to seeing this spring was senior Jarek Kindle. This young man just missed the 100 meter finals a year ago and he went over 22' in the long jump at state last year.

Well, he's been a tad injured this year but, it looks like he's rounding into form.

Did not run the 100 meters at Regions but was already pre-qualified. This is his heat of the 100 meters at state....Got some work to do but in the mix.

Heat 3  Prelims
  1    575 Hanson, Drew                  11 Hill City             11.74
  2    512 Schulz, Cole                  11 Dakota Valley         11.43
  3    646 Kindle, Jarek                 12 Miller                11.33
  4    771 Freeman, Landon               12 Tri-Valley            11.04
  5    679 Stluka, Hayden                11 Platte-Geddes         11.14
  6    769 Waln, Brendan                 11 Todd County           11.34
  7    649 Bauer, Nathan                 12 Mobridge-Pollock      11.44

Other Miller state qualifiers:

400 meters: Karst Hunter 56

3200 meters: Conner Bertsch

4x100 relay 45.4 at Regions....(Jarek Kindle, Garrett Knox, Joey Simpson, Karst Hunter) - A fast event at state but if this quartet can get the baton around like that...Finals could be in the mix.

4x200 relay: 1:35.2 at regions (Kindle, Knox, Simpson, Hunter (knock about a second off that and in the mix for a medal on Saturday)

Discus: Feel a tad bad for senior Jack Jones who threw 138 at regions, finished 3rd and didn't make it to state in the discus...Heck of a throw though)

High jump: Caden Gortmaker - 8th grader won the region title with a leap of 5-foot-8 (Certainly one to watch in the next few years) Gortmaker was third in the region in the triple jump.

Long jump: Jarek Kindle - 20-feet at regions....in the mix at state

Those college scouts have got to love Karst Hunter's 11.2

It has been fun following the Facebook posts of Miller Athletic Director, Darin Hunter. Son, Karst is getting recruited by a bunch of schools across the country, including I see this morning, Fresno State.

One thing you notice in the Facebook posts is that Karst Hunter is always working. Running, jumping, lifting, throwing...you name it he's doing it.

This folks is what PUTTING IN WORK will do for you..

So, Karst Hunter will not be running the 100 meters at the state track meet. Guessing not a lot of people in South Dakota noticed that Hunter ran an 11.24 100 meters at the region meet....Got nipped for that state track meet place...BUT...

1 Gabriel, Dylan      10 Stanley Coun             10.98 HH                10
  2 Bauer, Nathan       12 Mobridge-Pol             11.18 HH                 8
  3 Hunter, Karst       11 Miller                   11.24                    6

I'm guessing that more than a few college coaches noticed....That's fast and when you are talking about a 6-foot-5 guy, that is an attractive stat for recruits to look at.

Very excited to see how state track goes and how his senior year goes next season. BEAST on the Football field, BEAST on the basketball court, and now BEAST in track.

Good luck Rustlers, see you there!
