Lower Brule/Crow Creek youngsters having a special SUMMER

THUNDER NATION: Tierra flying horse, Marveen Ross, Audrey and Rosie drapeau, Kharmon Wells, Janessa Shields and Madison Wells along with coaches recently won the high school girls championship at the KOYA Classic in St. Francis South Dakota.

There have been a lot of basketballs bouncing, drills being done, lifting weight and young ladies from Lower Brule and Crow Creek getting better. Interesting to note the Crow Creek Lady Chieftains made the state tournament a year ago and the Lady Sioux from Lower Brule reached the Round-of-16...and, if this summer is any indication there are some young ladies coming up through the ranks that will add to those already good teams as early as this winter.

KOYA FM out of Rosebud hosted a big basketball tournament last week in St. Francis and four middle-schoolers and three high-schoolers and 1 Miss South Dakota Basketball nominee (Tierra Flying Horse who is headed to Bismarck State).

Joseph Wells coached the winning team in St. Francis.

"The girls have been putting in a lot of work through out the summer," Wells said. "We've hit several tournaments along with attending the Sacred Hoops work outs and our own. So crow Creek and lower brule should have some promising seasons."

MS Dakota Basketball Showcase:

number of those young ladies are participating in the Ms. Dakota Basketball Showcase this weekend. Here are a couple of notes from coach Russell on day 1 of the tournament. (And they are in the gold bracket playing all high schoolers and his team is made up of three freshman and the rest middle schoolers)

Coach Russel: "After starting with a tough loss we made a few changes and won our 2nd game 62-54. Very proud of the way my girls rose up to the challenge of playing kids 2 grades higher and winning!

Camryn Krogman led the way with 22 pts 6 assist 4 steals and 5 rebounds!
New comer  Maddison Wells who just joined the team TODAY followed up with 21 pts 3 assist 6 steals and 8 rebounds of her own!
Power forward Gia Winger chipped in with 6 pts and 8 rebounds.
Hillary Goodlow had 4 pts

It was a total team effort and with 2 girls who just joined today the future is even brighter for our team. We learned a lot about each other and tomorrow a critical game at 4pm to keep us in the running for 1st place and gold Division champion!

Game 1 also saw Alexis Myers score 6 pts and grab 6 rebounds for us. Alexis hurt her knee and could not return for us so prayers for a quick healing to Alexis!
