Sacred Hoops Tournament provides unlikely Gear-Up matchups between Wakpala and St. Francis Indian

By Rich Winter

Was visiting with former Flandreau great (cough) Michael Hammer yesterday…Sent him the picture above of two quality young people in South Dakota, St. Francis senior Jeffrey Curry 111 and Wakpala senior Rhaecine Sam…I mentioned to Mr. Hammer that these two knew each other from the South Dakota Gear-up Program.

Told Mr. Hammer that the two would be paired against each other during the upcoming Sacred Hoops Tournament….”What Sacred Hoops Tournament,” he asked.

The one on Feb. 9 that will be splitting sites between Lower Brule and Stephan…11 games, 22 teams..

All of these games will be live-streamed courtesy of Sacred Hoops & Big Sioux Media….

Rhaecine Same and Jeffrey Curry 111 both signed letters of intent this week!

Wakpala’s Rhaecine Sam won the Lakota Nation cross-country title this fall and just signed his letter of intent run for Division 11 Northern State. Currey, just announced on Social Media that we will continue his athletic and academic career at Minnesota West.

Just seems like a cool coincidence that these two young men who first met during a summer under the SD Gear Up Program (solid academic youngsters) will get a chance to play against each other…
