Pierre's Mikkelsen, Irene-Wakonda's KING epitomize multi-sport student/athlete in South Dakota

Sacred Hoops - Couple of notable performances popped up on the social-media periphery this week…that we’d like to pass along to our readers..Two South Dakota prep athletes achieved major milestones in their ‘other’ favorite sport.

On Jan. 15 Pierre’s Emily Mikkelsen went over the 1000 point barrier for her career with the Lady Governors as Pierre picked up their first win of the season with a 66-48 win over Douglas. Mikkelsen was a first-team AA, all-state selection a year ago…Emily Mikkelsen, Jr., Pierre — 15.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.2 spg.

In spite of receiving multiple offers to play basketball, Mikkelsen went with her first-love, soccer…ultimately, Mikkelsen’s choice came down to academics as she chose the University of South Dakota because of their exceptional Physical Therapy Program.

Trey King, Irene-Wakonda 1690 + points, 161 career Touchdowns

Alright, so earlier this week, Irene-Wakonda’s Trey King broke the Eagles school scoring record in a 68-30 win over Scotland when he topped the 1690 point plateau…Old record, brother, Gabe King, a junior on the 13-3 Northern State Basketball team…(Eagles starting to heat up as they pasted Alcester-Hudson, in Alcester, 70-33 last night…Big game with Castlewood on Saturday)

Trey King, the 6-foot-1 senior was a first-team Class B all-state performer, in basketball, as a junior, posting some monstrous stats.

White Trey King will be following in his brothers footsteps, signing with Northern State, he’ll be donning a helmet and shoulder-pads for Tom Dosch’s Northern State football team.

Quarterback: Trey King, Irene-Wakonda (senior, 6-2, 205). The do-it-all offensive weapon combined for 64 touchdowns on the season, including 40 through the air and 18 on the ground. King passed for 2,882 yards and rushed for 1,344 yards. He finished his career with 161 total touchdowns.
