How are Joe Caffrey's West Central girls not ranked in Class A

Alright, so here we are pushing mid-January and one of the teams in the girls Class A field no one seems to be talking about are Joe Caffrey’s West Central Trojans. Here sits a team that finished third in the Class A state tournament with a sparkling 9-0 record and the South Dakota media poll has Trojans as the eighth ranked Class A team.

Class A

1. Lennox (21) 10-1 117 1

2. Winner (3) 9-0 98 2

3. Vermillion 7-1 34 4

4. Belle Fourche 10-0 32 RV

5. St. Thomas More 7-3 25 3

Receiving votes: Hamlin 20, McCook Central/Montrose 19, West Central 14, Miller 1.

I suppose since Adam Quail’s, Madysen Vlastuin led Lennox squad deserves the top line after ‘slipping’ past St. Thomas More 61-57 in OT last week….

Does make you wonder how West Central is not ranked as they beat Tommy More by 17 (62-45) on Jan 11.

Look back one day to Jan. 11 when West Central beat Crofton, Nebraska 49-40….(Crofton just beat 7-3 Flandreau, 48-35.

On Tuesday, West Central beat Dell Rapids, 54-41, in Dell Rapids…

I suppose coming into the season, based on some heavy graduation losses, one might expect the Trojans to be down…But, it is Mid January and Caffrey’s crew is pasting everyone on the schedule.

The schedule will show us shortly what this club is about…

Jan. 22 - @ No. 3 Vermillion

Feb. 5 vs. McCook Central/Montrose in Salem

Feb. 7 vs. Lennox, in LENNOX

If the Round of 16 games were seeded right now, West Central is the No. 3 seed…

Belle Fourche No. 1, MCM NO. 2

And no one is going to want to see this squad with the right to go to the state A tournament on the line.
