Behind the Bleachers: Donnie Mitchell welcomes Justice Fire Cloud home...

CEB senior Justice Fire Cloud scored 19 points (and a deep, corner trey) much to the delight of CEB School Officer, Donnie Mitchell, who is pictured with his daughter, Mary Mitchell the CEB volleyball coach

By Rich Winter

Two of the first scores I saw this morning came from up north…CEB to be exact…as the Braves hosted Little Wound in boys and girls action…

Jess Mendoza’s girls beat Little Wound last night 67-51

And…

Lance Eagle Staff’s CEB boys improved to 8-2 with a 72-69 win over a red-hot Little Wound squad.

Alright, so pretty hard to get immediate stats from CEB because no one in the state really covers the Braves, called Jess Keckler and asked him a bit about each of the games…

So, CEB senior Justice Fire Cloud did not play ball last year….A very promising career took a different turn when Fire Cloud became the mother of twins, two young girls. Shout out to Justice Fire Cloud for coming back, going through all the hard work…lotta people would not have had the guts to come back..Well Done!

The very first picture on the upper-right-hand portion of this story is Justice Fire Cloud, pictured with her coach, Jess Mendoza after she announced in September that she was coming back for one more run with the Lady Braves…

As you can imagine, having twins and being away from the sport for over a year, well, Fire Cloud had some work to do to get back into shape…

She’s getting damn close!

Saw this post earlier this morning on Fire Cloud’s timeline…

Me just thinking out loud. But honestly, when I hit the corner three and heard Donnie Mitch say, “Welcome home girl.” To me, that hit home y’all. Everyone bared with me through my rough journey of getting back in shape and I’m glad to finally say the love of the game is all coming back to me. Been so frustrated with my game lately and just to hear those words, makes me just.. happy and feel great inside. I am truly thankful to be able to come back and play one last year, honestly means the world to me. 😌❤️💙 - Justice Fire Cloud

After visiting with Keckler, that is not quite where the story ends…

So, Fire-Cloud noted that when she hit the corner-three she heard School Officer and Tribal Police Officer, Donnie Mitchell say, “Welcome Home Girl.”

You see, Donnie Mitchell is a fan favorite for the CEB kids…Sees them all the time, probably gives em crap on their way to and from classes and such…

And, he’s currently under-going radiation treatments to battle cancer…

I think sometimes we forget about those periphery people at schools across South Dakota. Mitchell isn’t a principal or a teacher, but he’s a friend/mentor to the students at CEB and is obviously making a big difference to those youth and that community.

Suddenly this CEB girls squad looks dangerous at 7-5….

Keep an eye on these ladies…after losing to Todd County, the Lady Braves have reeled off three straight wins. Big game with Crow Creek, in Stephan on Jan. 31 and then MURDERER’s Row, BUT ALL in what looks like a revitalized fan base in CEB…

Feb. 2 - Winner @ CEB

Feb. 4 - Red Cloud @ CEB

Feb. 11 Pine Ridge at CEB

Don’t know a lot about the boys game…sounds like it got pretty dramatic at the end…

Cecelio Montgomery was in foul trouble early

Sophomore Rance Harrison played well I’m told

CEB has won five straight heading into a monster road-game at Red Cloud on Monday…
