Wow, a quick look around the state of South Dakota right now and basketball suddenly seems a whole lot less important as the central and eastern parts of the state are about to get hit with what Weather Alerts are calling - ‘Life-Threatening Wind Chill’ for tonight, and in some places extending all the way to Thursday morning.
Checked the National Weather Service for a forecast for Sisseton…
Steady temperature around -22. Wind chill values as low as -56. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 24 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph.
Tonight - Overnight low -33, Wind Chill Values as low as -62
Winds gusting as high as 33 mph.
Daytime high -18, Wind chill value as low as -59
Pierre Tonight: -20, Windchill -35
Lake Andes tonight: -18, Windchill -40
At any rate, just kinda wanted to remind folks to be good neighbors during this stretch and keep an eye on each other…
There are a lot of farmers and ranchers that are going to be working their buns off over the next few days to make sure their animals and livestock are ok. We forget that it takes a night-and-day and all hands on deck to get the livestock through this kind of storm.
A lot of vehicles and tractors and such that are going to be frozen up….and if you’ve ever lived on a farm you can inevitably bet that something of ‘must-need’ magnitude is going to break.
Want to challenge some of our Sacred Hoops young people here…When this kind of weather hits the elderly don’t need to be out in it and they certainly don’t need to sweep and shovel…Sacred Hoops kids go say hello and check on someone…Go offer to sweep or shovel or start car or ask if they need anything.
Somewhere this week noticed someone from Cheyenne River had their pipes freeze up….Had to use a Knipco Heater to get that fixed…and that was several days ago.
The reality is there will probably be people in South Dakota that don’t have a place to be indoors today…Let’s make sure that no one is outside…
In many of these small communities the convenience stores and grocery stores are going to be shut down….
Please be safe and check on your neighbors.
At any rate, the real message here is we just want folks to be safe…This is the warning from the National Weather Service out of Sioux Falls.
.THE DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS COULD CAUSE FROSTBITE ON EXPOSED SKIN IN AS LITTLE AS 5 MINUTES. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
