Region 7A girls showdown: No. 3 Winner @ LNI Champs Todd County, 7A breakdown

By Rich Winter

There isn’t any way to dance around this one…A Monster game is going down tonight in Mission as Larry Aaker’s No. 3 ranked Winner Lady Warriors (5-0) on the season invade Ben Reifel Auditorium, Galen Busch Court for a matchup with Bob Boyd’s 6-1 Lady Falcons.

These two schools, separated by 43 miles, both with state tournament aspirations collide with the top-perch in Region 7A on the line.

Region 7A standings:

Todd County 44.1436 - 6-1

Pine Ridge 44.1257 - 7-1

Winner 44.005 - 5-0

Red Cloud 41..7504 4-4

Little Wound 40.4002 - 2-3

St. Francis 40.000 - 3-3

Bennett County 37.8000 0-5

Aaker’s Lady Warriors have been absolutely impressive running out to that 5-0 start, with their closest game being the 68-48 win over a 4-2 Parkston squad. The combined record of their opponents so far this year is 9-15. This is the first real test for Winner and it is a biggie because the Warriors only see Todd County and Pine ridge from Region 7A during the regular season.

A balanced offense from Winner with four players averaging in double-figures.

Bella Swedlund 13.8 ppg

Gabrielle Kocer 12.4 ppg

Kaly Bertram 10.6 ppg

Morgan Hammerbeck 9.4

A very strong bench for Aaker as the Lady Warriors go 12 deep.

Lady Falcons dropped a Holiday game at Red Cloud and are 6-1

After a tremendous run to the 2018 Lakota Nation championship, Todd County had just one game over the Holidays, a 67-66 loss (OT) to Matt Rama’s Red Cloud Crusaders.

Lady Falcons trailed the whole contest, fought back to take it into overtime, but couldn’t quite get over the hump.

During an early December interview with Sacred Hoops, Aaker talked about how tuff Region 7A and ultimately what respect he had for Todd County’s two, top-guns, Kelsie Herman and Raven Cournoyer.

The junior-senior tandem have exploded onto the Class A scene this year posting some monster number that find both players averaging over 21 per game.

Like Winner, Boyd has the luxury of depth with players like Lacee Halligan (Carter), Doris White Hat (50 percent 3-point shooter), Haylee Quick Bear (7 rebounds per game), Alanis Murray (spark off the bench), Shanelle Lone Dog (Gives everything), Kylie Randall (worker) and Teciah Spotted Tail (defense)

Winner is tall, really tall.

Todd County is not!

Both teams are scrappy and this is one of the best rivalries in the state….

One of the reasons this is such a big game is both Winner and Todd County know that no matter the result of the game tonight there are serious other contenders in the Region.

Laura Big Crow’s Pine Ridge Lady Thorpes at 7-1 look mighty dangerous

Pine Ridge beat Red Cloud 58-56 on Wednesday in Pine Ridge

Every time I check a box score for the Lady Thorpes, Duka Thompson is going good things.

Last night: 15 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds.

Taysha Big Crow added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Haylee Langdeau had 10 points and eight rebounds.

While Red Cloud fell to 4-4 on the season it is taking a minute to replace Emonee Pourier, the 6-footer who tore an ACL just before this season started.

Scoff at 4-4 if you like, Losing by two in Pine Ridge is a good result.

Red Cloud was paced by Stevi Fallis with 17 points. Moriah Morrisette had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Sharissa Haas grabbed 10 rebounds.
