After falling behind 14-0, Lex Heathershaw’s Wall Eagles rallied, scoring 27 of the next 33 points, improving to 5-1 on the season with a 27-21 win over Lyman.
Things could not have started worse for the Wall Eagles. After receiving the opening kick, the Eagles went three-and-out, and had a short punt of about ten yards to give the Lyman Raiders superb field position.
After a Conner Mohr-Eymer gain of 5, Lyman freshman QB, Teagan Gourneau unleashed his running abilities as the Raiders took a 6-0 lead.
Alright, so after the score, Wall has a short kick-return to their own 25….Three plays later the Eagles are punting and only managed a 7-yard punt. Three plays later, Shilo Mowry scored on a 3-yard run…Gorneaux added the 2-point conversion and the Raiders led 14-0 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagles started the next possession on their own 33-yard line….Tack Tines picked up a first-down rushing but the yards were negated with a holding penalty.
But, QB Enoch Cuny picked up 20-yards on a QB run…Next play, Tines, (2nd in the Class B long jump last year as a sophomore 21’3”) ran off right guard, gathered himself then exploded up the sideline for a 44-yard TD run….Kick is good and Lyman leads 14-7 with 4:04 remaining in the half.
Early in the second quarter, Gourneau added another TD run and the Raiders 20-7.
On the ensuing kickoff the Eagles fumbled giving Lyman the ball on their own 32.
With things looking tuff for Heathershaw’s Eagles the defense stiffened.
On the first play from scrimmage, Gourneau got leveled at the edge of the sideline. On the next play, Kole Gallino stuffed a Raider run. Next play, Gallino got just enough of Gourneau to slow him down for no gain. With a 3rd-and-goal at the 14, QB/DB Enoch Cuny broke through the line and sacked the Lyman QB. A pass on 4th-down was incomplete and the Eagles took over on their own 18-yard line.
And then, Enoch Cuny took it to the HOUSE!
That score from Cuny cut the margin to 20-14.
At the 5:46 mark of the third quarter, Tines and Cuny struck again.
Cuny dumped a pass into the left-flat and Tines found another gear, outracing the Raider defense to the end-zone as the Eagles took their first lead of the game, 21-20.
The Eagles added another late score on a 3-yard TD run from Rylan McDonnell for the final margin of 27-21.
Wall improved to 5-1 on the season with games remaining against Jones County/White River and New Underwood.
The Raiders fall to 3-3 with games remaining against New Underwood and Philip.
This Gourneau kid looks special….
After seeing Lyman beat JC/WR last week, we kind of wondered how the Raiders had turned the corner after losing 3-straight to start the season.
* Connor Mohr-Eymer is a big-TUFF kid that doesn’t get much publicity.
* Justice Jessop is one of the best lineman in 9A football
* This Gourneau QB looks like the real deal…Has a ton of fakes he executes from the QB position…Took a big hit last night and got right up….
