The Region 1B boys playoffs are going to be an absolute Dog-Fight....

While Clark / Willow Lake look like the prohibitive favorite to advance to the Round-of-16, Northwestern, Warner and Aberdeen Christian are LURKING….Whoever advances from this Region is certain to be battle tested.

Still a lot of boys basketball in the regular season to be played, but if we peek up at Region 1B, four incredibly talented squads are going to be fighting for Region supremacy, and to avoid the dreaded No. 4 seed and a potential region semi against the Jerome Nesheim led CWL Cyclones, the No. 3 ranked team in Class B.

Let’s check the Region 1B standings current as of Friday (a.m.) Feb. 15th.

Clark/Willow Lake 45.2001 - 13-2

Northwestern 44.37513 - 13-3

Warner 44.0001 - 14-4

Aberdeen Christian 43.88214 13-4

As of this writing Region 1B top 4 teams have a combined 53-13 record (.803%). The next

highest region is Region 5 with a record of 51-16 (.761%).

Let’s check each teams last few opponents for the regular season.

CWL - 3 home games with Class A schools…Redfield/Doland (tonight), Vs. Class A No. 5 Tiospa Zina (Saturday), Monday @ home vs. Aberdeen Roncalli, @ Class B Arlington Feb. 26 (Nesheim ‘s teams always play a TUFF schedule…vs. those Class A teams, expect CWL to add more seeding points)

Northwestern: Anthony Redmen’s squad incurred only their third loss of the season, 84-79 2 OT to a 12/4 Leola/Frederick squad. Six-foot-3 guard Zeck Clemons has already gone over 1000 points for his career and this squad has a nice mix of tall and talented underclassmen and a steady senior class…Last three games: Home vs. 4-11 Wilmot, home vs. Class A Miller and at 4-13 Hitchcock/Tulare (Should run the table although Karst Hunter from Miller has been on a tear)

Warner: Derek Hoellein’s squad is having a great season at 14-4 and currently holding down the No. 3 seed in Region 1B…But, that lead over Aberdeen Christian is small (.11796)…The Monarchs have a Monster matchup, @ home, Saturday vs. 14-2 Arlington. Win that, seed points jump…Close with 4-10 Waverly-South Shore in Waverly

Aberdeen Christian - David Rohrbach’s squad heads into the weekend with a 13-4 record. The Knights started the season running off 11-straight wins…Guess if you are counting from the bleachers, AC has lost 4-6 but look at the strength of the squads AC has been facing.

Jan. 19 - Lost to Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley.

Jan. 22 - Lost 54-53 to a 10-8 Herreid/Selby Area team

Jan. 31 - Lost to Northwestern (In Mellette) 57-53

Feb. 9 Lost to Class B No. 4 Bridgewater/Emery

Wow talk about a character building gauntlet this team has been through the last three weeks….But, one more big test on Saturday @ Home vs. Sully Buttes (finish on the road at Britton/Hecla)…Boy, beat Sully Buttes on Saturday and who knows what the Region 1B standings will look like by Monday.

(Author’s Note)

Can’t end this without mentioning the success of Northwestern, Aberdeen Christian, and Warner

at last fall’s State Cross Country Meet. They combined for 4 top 10 individual finishers including

the individual State Champion, and a runner-up team finish.
