Fireworks expected when St. Francis and Wakpala collide at Sacred Hoops Classic

Wakpala seniors Rhaecine Sam and Tyray Cadotte combine to average 33 points per game for Barry Mann’s Sioux. Center, St. Francis junior Jaylen Bear Robe has been a steady and solid contributor for Troy Lunderman’s Warriors…At right, Jordan Kills in Water has been on fire the last three games including 7-made 3-pointers and a career high 25 in a win over McLaughlin last week.

Well, it looks like the deep freeze across South Dakota is going to lighten up, at least for a few days. So many games postponed and I’m sure we’ve had more than a few Athletic Directors scrambling around trying to find make up dates, and even refs, for games needed to be rescheduled in a hurry.

Should be some great games across the state tonight but my attention for Saturday will be tuned to Crow Creek and Lower Brule for the first annual Sacred Hoops Classic.

One of the games I’ve got my eye on is the 12:45 p.m. game in Lower Brule as 5-10 St. Francis takes on 5-4 Wakpala….

Despite that 5-10 record Troy Lunderman’s Warriors have been playing their best basketball of the season. On Feb. 1, the night that Red Cloud’s Alejandro Rama scored 60, Christian McGhee’s squad needed every one of those points as St. Francis hung right with the Saders, falling 82-72. The next night the Warriors got past McLaughlin 74-60. On Tuesday, St. Francis hung with Winner (Brady Fritz 35 points) for three quarters before dropping the game 82-68.

Sophomore Caylen Clairmont has been this group’s leading scorer…Mix in Junior Jaylen Bear Robe (17/10) and toss in senior Jordan Kills In Water who has been lethal from the 3-point line for the last two weeks. Jaffrey Curry and Lars King give this team some muscle and effort off the bench…Prince Black Spotted Horse has stepped up his game, Kyler McCloskey is steady and Traven Traversie is Mr. Energy off the bench.

The Wakpala guards are going to be a handful…

At left is Wakpala senior, Tyray Cadotte who averages 17.1 ppg…Center is Sioux senior Rhaecine Sam who is averaging 15 per game…Far right, Sam finished 3rd in the Class B state cross country championships last fall and has signed to run collegiately at Northern State.

In a game against Crazy Horse on Feb. 2, Sam posted a triple-double of 23 points, 11 steals, 11 rebounds. Kid is cat quick and he don’t get tired.

The night before Cadotted posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Should be interesting…This game will be webcast at Big Sioux Media - Here is the site for that…
