Track Tuesday: Brenneman (Sturgis), Hill City girls have impressive mid and long-distance outings

Defending AA 800 champ, Ethan Brenneman is off to a quick start and Hill City’s Karlee Simmons was one-of-two Lady Rangers to break standard in the 3200 meters.

With warmer weather rolling in this week, we can expect the times, heights and distances to improve by next Tuesday as folks are scrambling for meets to gear up for Howard Wood which is looming in May.

A couple of athletes and programs that caught my attention this week were:

Sturgis senior: Ethan Brenneman

Has the fastest 800 time in the state…1:58.73 (Jackson Meyer - SF O’Gorman 2nd 1:59.98.).

The defending AA Champ, Brenneman ran a 1:55.45 to win that title in 2018.

Abby Cutler and Karlee Simmons big openers in 3200 meters

2019 Class A girls 3200 meter automatic qualifiers - Standard is 12-flat

1.Cutler, Abby 11:42.86 Hill City

2.Bainbridge, Ali 11:44.54 Lennox

3.Simmons, Karlee 11:51.30 Hill City

One of my favorite guys to run into during track season is Hill City track coach Joe Noyes.

His Hill City girls in particular have been doing some serious damage in cross country and track for the last five plus years.

Went looking everywhere for a picture of Abby Cutler - NADA…Looked at the program and realized the Class A 3200 meters leader is a 7th-grader.

For those that follow track, especially out west, one of the best xc and distance rivalries is Hill City and Custer. Haven’t seen much out of the Custer girls yet but Custer’s Jace Osterling, did have a solid 3200 opener when he clocked 10:17.59

Class A boys 3200 meter qualifiers: Standard is 10:26

1.Atwood, Alec10:10.81Beresford

2.Oesterling, Jace10:17.59Custer

3.Sorensen, Justin10:19.62Vermillion

4.Wulf, Camden10:19.84Lennox

5.Tegethoff, Caden10:20.84Platte-Geddes

Those numbers should lower a bit in the coming weeks as guys ready for an opportunity for elite times at Howard Wood.
