How low/high can Watertown senior, Haiti born, Pierre Lear go

Watertown’s Pierre Lear will be chasing some seriously fast times in the hurdles after a successful season of basketball for the Arrows.

Was checking out the AA state track qualifiers for Boys this morning, and yep, right on cue, Watertown senior Pierre Lear is scorching the hurdles….Both of them!

110m Hurdles

1.Lear, Pierre 14.94 Watertown

2.West, Gavin15.36 Sturgis Brown

3.Martens, Andrew15.68SF Lincoln

300 hurdles:

300m Hurdles

1.Lear, Pierre 40.04 Watertown

2. Twomey, Kayleb40.72RC Central

3.Martens, Andrew40.74SF Lincoln

Lear is very quick over the hurdles and later this season we could see him creep close to both state records.

But, he’s also a high jumper. Lear finished 2nd in the Class AA ranks last season with a jump of 6-foot-6. He jumped 6-foot-2 in his first outdoor meet this season. He was the 2018 State champion in the 100 and 300 hurdles.

At last year’s state track meet I talked to a fella from Watertown and asked him about Pierre Lear. He told me then that he was adopted from Haiti and had been living in the United States after a rough early childhood.

Never quite got around to doing the story, BUT, I did a Google Search on PIerre Lear and found that Midco Sports had done an outstanding feature story (Video) of a rather remarkable journey in the South Dakota sports world.
