Shots fired at Howard Wood: A clash is coming in the Class A 1600 and 3200

Custer’s Mallory Delmont with Hill City’s Karlee Simmons. Picture at right is Lennox 8th-grader, Ali Bainbridge who is having a monster season for the Orioles.

One of the fun things to do when you follow the Howard Wood Dakota Relays is to see where certain athletes are. The distance races are always special at Howard Wood as the fields are LOADED with talent from across the upper-midwest. Howard Wood is the litmus test by Class though. Athletes may be running against kids from bigger schools and different states, BUT, they are keeping an eye on the girls around them that they will be seeing in a few weeks at the Class A state meet.

Howard Wood gave distance fans a delicious tuneup for the state meet. As evidenced by the times, the state meet should be hella-interesting.

Ali Bainbridge looks like the real deal:

Ali Bainbridge is only an 8th-grader and after finishing 2nd in the Class A state cross-country meet last fall, she’s exploded onto the South Dakota track season with impressive efforts from 800-3200 meters.

3200: At Howard Wood, Bainbridge dipped under 11-minutes in the race…10:59.85

Not a lot of Class A girls go that low and you start to wonder if Bainbridge could threaten the great Heidi Reed (Canton’s) Class A state meet record.

1600 meters: 5:14.27

800 meters: 2:24.32 (qualified early)

Lennox has the 2nd ranked 3200 relay: (9:52.66

Lennox has the No.3 Class A Medley time of 4:23.84

Bainbridge’s times are super fast, BUT, she’s got company as Mallory Delmont (Custer) and Karlee Simmons (Hill City) are right there.

Mallory Delmont - Custer junior

Early in her Custer career Delmont looked like she was going to do some damage. Believe she was a state cross-country champ once.

She’s run a lot of relay races for Custer and contributed to so many TEAMS.

After a so-so sophomore campaign on the track, Delmont served notice that she’ll be a factor at the state meet.

Mallory Delmont Howard Wood 1600 meters:

Ali Bainbridge 5:14.27

Mallory Delmont: 5:14.52

Coach Karen Karim’s Custer distance kids looked great at Howard Wood.

The girls won the Class A 3200 Relay: 9:47.46

Hill City’s Karlee Simmons (front HC runner) will be searching for state titles

Karlee Simmons has had herself a brilliant career at Hill City. She’s won a state team cross country title and a 4x800 state title with her Lady Ranger teammates.

For all of that success, there has never been an individual title.

Based on Howard Wood, that could change…

3200 Meters:

Ali Bainbridge - 10:59.85

Karli Simmons - 11:02.87

1600 meters:

Ali Bainbridge 5:14.27
