Was saddened to hear the recent news that Stan Eagle Star of Gregory passed away. Want to share part of Mr. Eagle Bear’s obituary and then tell a story of one ferocious football player.
Stanley Edward Eagle Star was born on August 23, 1964 in Rosebud, South Dakota, to Edward & Constance (Crooked Foot) Eagle Star. He was the second of seven children. Stan attended a one-room school house in Dixon, South Dakota with his siblings and a number of cousins until it closed in 1977-1978. Then he went to Gregory schools and graduated in 1984. While in high school Stan enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1983. He was very active in school athletics such as football, basketball, and track. After graduation, Stan attended one semester of college in Huron, SD.
Stan met and married Della Stoneman on May 26, 1985. On June 23, 1986 they had their first child together a baby girl Angel. That next year Edward was born. Lucy in 1989, Ted in 1990, Sidney in 1993, and Sage completed their family on June 14, 1995. They moved to Dixon, SD and later Rosebud until 2004 when they moved back to Stan’s hometown Gregory, SD. There he worked various jobs until 2010 when his health became an issue. In his last days Stanley enjoyed spending time with family and trying to entertain his 22 grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Stanley is survived by his wife Della; his six children Angel (Mike), Ed (Christa), Lucy (Jason), Ted (Kendra), Sidney (Desirea), and Sage (Marcie); He is also survived by five of his siblings: Debra (Dave) Larvie of Mitchell, SD, Thomas (Celeste) Eagle Star, Brenda (Brian) Whitepipe, Luke (Dorothy) Eagle Star, and Della (Russell) Nelson all of Gregory, SD; and his 22 grandchildren, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Constance and by one brother Bryan Lee.
At Gregory High-school this man was a beast in the trenches.
Alright, so I grew up in Bennett County. In the early 80’s, and every year of my high school football playing days, we opened our season with the Gregory Gorillas. First three years, they STOMPED the crap out of us…Senior year, we lost 13-0 but Chad Kingsbury did not play (Sunburn?).
At any rate, every year, usually during the winter, I think about Stan Eagle Star as my dislocated thumb (from 1983) reminds me I had to square off against Big Stan. Seems like he was just terrorizing our Offensive line and our coach moved me to OT. Mr. Eagle Star ripped through the line, shredded me on his way to the QB while dislocating the thumb…(They taped it up and I was fine Mr. Hammer)
Stan was like 6-foot-4 and 250…Big, thick and strong…lil mean also…very intimidating.
Saw Mr. Eagle Star at a few track meets in the 80’s…BIG guy, could chuck it (discus) a ton.
Funeral services for Stanley Eagle Star, age 54, of Gregory, SD, were held on Friday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Gregory Auditorium Community Room with Reverend Neil and Grace Old Lodge officiating.

Again, our condolence to the family and the communities saddened by the loss of Stan Eagle star.
