Flandreau football field to be named: Tiger McGlone Field on Aug 30 vs. MCM

On Friday, Aug. 30, Booster Club Stadium in Flandreau will get a new field name as the School Board elected to name the football field, Tiger McGlone Field.

School board members on June 10 supported the first reading of a plan to name the football field Tiger McGlone Field after long-time teacher and coach James “Tiger” McGlone.

McGlone taught 31 in Flandreau and coached football each of those years, wrestling for 16 years and golf for 15 years.

“It’s quite an honor,” said McGlone, who is 80. “I go to every game if I get a chance.”

The stadium will continue to be called Booster Club Stadium.

The naming of the field is a way to honor McGlone, and plans include a sign on the west end of the field, said John Shaeffer, one of the people who proposed the idea to the district

Others that spearheaded the plan are Tom Hansen, Steve Christensen and Randy Wilts.

“We just thought it was appropriate,” Shaeffer said.

The group has gotten positive feedback around town. “He was out there on the field coaching,” he said, so naming the field after him is a good fit.

McGlone was active in the Booster Club when the stadium was built in the 1960s and continues to support Flandreau athletics.

“Nobody goes to more sporting events than him,” Shaeffer said.
