Sacred Hoops 15-u player is South Dakota high school 'Bareback' state CHAMP!

Red Cloud sophomore, Jhett Knight recently won a state title in the bareback competition at the South Dakota high school rodeo finals in Belle Fourche.

By Rich Winter

You can only imagine how busy of a summer Red Cloud’s Jhett Knight is having. After completing his freshman season at Red Cloud, Knight is playing on Eldon Marshall’s Sacred Hoops All-Native, 15-U team.

Check out his mates on this roster that is loaded with soon-to-be-sophomore looking to contribute to their respective high schools

Dylan Marshall, Zander Albers, Clayton Apple, JayShaun Morrisette, Jhett Knight, Nashon LeBeau, Slade Cournoyer, Trey Yellow Boy, Trevin Vasquez, Hehaka Catches Enemy

In addition to spending his summer working on his game, Knight is working on his game in an even bigger arena.

At last weekend’s South Dakota High School Rodeo finals in Belle Fourche, Knight claimed the state title in the Bareback riding event. And now, he will attend the National High School Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July.

That’s BIG TIME!

Knight had solid rides in the first and second go arounds, at the state meet and it was his consistency that carried him to that state title with an overall score of 62.5

2nd place - Filipek Cooper, Rapid City - 59.5

And he wasn’t done….Knight also finished 11th in the state in the Bull riding competition…

Some TUFF news to pass along to the South Dakota HS sports world, and also a South Dakota RODEO FAMILY that Philip HS senior, Pedro Dennis died yesterday in an accident.

Pedro was active in football and rodeo along with other Philip HS activities like FFA and choir.

"His smile, personality and heart were as big and open as the western prairie," a close friend offered in response to his passing.

We at Sacred Hoops would like to extend our condolences to the Dennis family, the Philip (Area) family and each and every young person that is hurting right now...

Howell and Begeman are SD Gatorade Track Athletes of the Year

A big shout out and congratulations to Shayla Howell of Belle Fourche and Trevor Begaman (Selby) for being named South Dakota Gatorade Track Athletes of the year. Howell won four events at the Class A state track meet (100, 200, long jump and triple jump) and set a Class A State Meet Record in the 100 prelims 12.01. Begeman broke the Class B state meet record in the shot put with a heave of 60'2". That was the top throw in South Dakota this year regardless of class. Congratulations.
